The Big Sleep is a detective novel by Raymond Chandler, whose writing came up in the same video that led me to The Fixer. The video quotes a Chandler line as an example of writing built on close observation.
This is Chandler’s first novel and the first with Philip Marlowe. The Maltese Falcon is the other detective novel on my list.
