One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a book I added to my list without writing down why, which is exactly what I promised not to do.

Solzhenitsyn was a prisoner in a Soviet labor camp for years, and the book is, as the title says, one day in a prisoner’s life. Somehow, the Soviet Union itself published this in 1962, during Khrushchev’s thaw.
